The Saskatchewan Chicken Championship was wrapped up with the naming of the winners from the field of 47 that competed. Named champion was first year all-age dog Lester’s Tom Cruise. The white and orange pointer male is owned by Colorado patron Brad H. Calkins and was handled by Andy Daugherty. Runner-up was Phantom’s Last Dime, seven-year-old white and liver pointer male owned by Larry Lee, Larry Carter and R.O. Berryhill of Lakeland, Ga., and handled by Robin Gates.
The Derby attracted 26 hopefuls. The winner emerged in Capital’s Market Maker, owned by Capital Kennels of Guthrie, Okla., and handled by Randy Anderson. Second was Shadow’s Back Talk, owned by N. G. “Butch” Houston of Nashville, Ga., and handled by Robin Gates. Conecuh’s Black Market, owned by Tony Gibson of Union Springs, Ala., and handled by Steve Hurdle, was third.
Judges for the titular stake were Dale E. Bush of College Station, Tex., and Gary Meschishnick of Saskatoon, Sask. For the Derby Dale Bush was joined by Lou Qualtiere of Saskatoon.
