Region 5 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship
The Region 5 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship held at The Sportman's Assoc Grounds in Grove Springs, MO boasted 45 dogs over 4 days and Judges John Mathys and Dr Allen Dunbar both of Wisconsin had the pleasure to name Purple Line Dan pointer male owned and handled by George Hill of Wentzville MO to top Honors. 5 finds and a strong forward race with 1 unproductive in a proven location gave Dan his 3rd Championship in as many weeks. Mark Livingston from Central City IA handled his Pointer male Waubeck Brutal Sin to the Runner Up position with 3 finds and an extreme race on the 2nd hour course. All in attendance agreed these 2 dogs were the best of the lot for this round of play. All courses hosted ample opportunities for bird work and offered the open ground to show your dog.
These premier trial grounds are managed by the Sportman's Assoc of Southwest Missouri and the grounds fees collected along with 20th century funds have made it possible to continue this venue for weekend trials and Open and Amateur Championships all season long. Early season pre-release quail program and a weekly feeding regime have made these grounds a pleasure to use. Feedstrips planted along all field edges and harvesting hay have groomed these grounds to perfection for competition of all breeds. If you haven't had the fortune to compete at this location you are missing a great opportunity. Watch the Field for a brace by brace synopsis of this Championship running in an upcoming issue.
Many thanks to Richard Lewis for his chairman duties and holding another successful Region 5 Championship in 2010.

HP American Made, pointer male with a serious all age race punctuated with a single out front find late in the hour claimed first for owner and handler Rodney Shoemaker from Missouri. American Made's bracemate, Wiggin's River Knot, veteran pointer male in the ownership of handler Don Wiggins of Southern Illinois was named runner up with a single find early in the brace. Judges Greg St. John from Tennessee and Dennis Burgess from Iowa rode attentively and their decision was well received.
Others with bird work finishing the hour in the order of their appearance included, HP Boss Lady for Rodney Shoemaker, Greypointe Fandango for Doug Meyer and Salty Dog Playmaker for Jeff Fraser. Friday's running featured a couple dogs with good bird work that were later lost.
The Northeast Kansas Club and the Onaga grounds provided an expansive layout with prairie chickens seen in the air several times but no dogs managing to point any. A few coveys of wild quail were pointed while others were ridden up by the gallery and scouts.
Joe Worsham chaired and did a great job keeping everything running smoothly and the landowners around the Fairview Community Center joined us for a great Friday evening banquet. Weather was ideal for dogs - highs barely reaching 50 on Friday with overcast and even cooler Saturday.

Results: 2010 Nat Amt Grouse CH
For November in Marienville the weather could not have been more amenable to a successful trial.
After five full days in the saddle, weather from 65 degrees and sub 40% humidity to sub freezing mornings with heavy frost, to 45 and damp, to 45 and steady rain with 30-35 mph winds the judges named pointer male Thunderhills Zeus from the 25th brace Champion with 4 grouse finds. Zeus is owned by Harry Tsepelias from Virginia and was handled by Dick Brenneman of Port Matilda, PA.
Named runner-up from the 33rd and final brace was setter female Pine Straw Katydid with 2 grouse finds. Katy is owned by Mike Reeves of Atlanta, GA and was handled by Mike. It was Mike's first time handling a dog in a grouse trial.
Marienville was it's usual fickle self. Grouse were available throughout, very often abundantly, very often it appears they are not. Among the truest challenges of the best bird dogs we can offer up as always. The judges had several dogs finish with clean work on grouse. Their decisions were well received. A full report from our reporter will follow in the American Field.
Thanks to everyone who attended and entered dogs. It was a record entry for the stake with record galleries and attendees.
